Joining Neighbourhood Watch in the Steyning Sector
Neighbourhood Watch helps you, your neighbours and the police
by strengthening your community. It can make your area a better place to live.
Its aims are: -
· To reduce opportunities for crime and make it more difficult for criminals
to act.
· To build up a community spirit so that neighbours can work together for
everyone's benefit.
· To tell police and your neighbours about suspicious incidents in your neighbourhood.
Membership of Neighbourhood Watch is usually free however some schemes may
charge a very small annual fee to cover administration costs.
If you feel you would like to join a local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme first ask your neighbours if they know of a scheme in your road or street. If there is a scheme they can point you to the local street co-ordinator who will arrange you membership.
If you cannot find a scheme in you locality please contact your local Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) at Steyning Police Station. Click here for contact details. They will be able to confirm the availability of a scheme in your area and if so ask a co-ordinator to contact you.
However if there is no scheme operating in your area you may
consider starting one and becoming a Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator. The
role of Street Co-ordinator is
not difficult, only takes a little time and is a good way of getting to know
all your neighbours.
The police circulate information about current crimes to local neighbourhood
schemes and offer advice on crime prevention and local interest by a newsletter
distributed by co-ordinators. More urgent matters are passed to co-ordinators
by telephone or e-mail for forwarding to members.
If you would like to consider becoming a Street Co-ordinator your local PCSO can arrange for an Area Co-ordinator to visit you and explain the benefits of Neighbourhood Watch and answer any questions you have.
